Pressures on journalists and media organisations are designed to reduce transparency and accountability in society. Usually it means powerful interests have something to hide from public view. Ultimately, media need to do more to convince public opinion that such targeting is an attack on common values and will not be tolerated.

WAN-IFRA, in conjunction with the FOJO Media Institute, are calling on media worldwide to support stronger protections for women journalists in a text released to mark the 250th anniversary celebrations of Sweden’s ‘Freedom of the Press Act’, the first of its kind in the world.

"Unless our societies fully appreciate the value of professional journalism - and that it contributes directly to their betterment - then our own efforts will always be limited to reacting to attacks and insecurity rather than by being proactive in eliminating the causes of it."
